High protein diet: good or bad

Our body is made of protein. Muscle, skin, nail, hair for every part of our body protein is the actual building block. We also need protein to contract muscles and transport nutrients to various parts of our body.

So it is only natural to believe that the more protein one has through his or her diet the better. But the truth is somewhat different.

It fact if you take lots of excess protein the extra energy [1gm protein produce 4kcal] gets accumulated in our body in the form of fat.

Actually the protein requirement varies according to age, sex, body composition and activity level of an individual.

Many people take 100g to 180g of protein per day. And in most of the cases this is quite high a number. Also one thing should be kept in mind high protein diet requires more water and has a tendency to dehydrate the body.

As a rule of thumb it can be said if you physically very active you should consume 0.6-0.8 gm of protein per pound of your body weight and if are less involved in physical activities then 0.5 gm of protein per pound of body weight would be enough.
